Why Get Married in Denmark?

Denmark offers a comparatively streamlined legal marriage process for international couples. No Danish residency is required, and applications can normally be prepared before the couple travels to Denmark.

No Danish Residency Required

You do not need to live in Denmark. You must, however, meet the Danish marriage requirements and document that you can legally enter and stay in Denmark.

A Structured Application Process

Complete and straightforward applications are often processed by the Danish authorities within approximately five working days. Cases requiring additional information may take considerably longer. View current official processing times

International Marriage Certificates

Danish marriage certificates are widely recognised internationally. Depending on where the certificate will be used, an apostille, legalisation, translation or local registration may be required.

Open and Inclusive

Denmark permits civil marriage for both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. Every application is assessed according to the Danish marriage requirements.

Approval, processing times and ceremony availability are determined by the Danish authorities and municipalities. MarryDenmark cannot guarantee approval, a specific processing time or a particular ceremony date.

How It Works

A structured, seven-step process. Every case is assessed individually before we begin.

01

Free Case Assessment

Tell us about your nationalities, countries of residence, previous marriages, legal stay and preferred wedding timeline. Do not upload passports or sensitive documents at this stage.

02

Service Recommendation

We assess the information provided and confirm which service is suitable for your case. Complex cases cannot be booked as Application Handling.

03

Secure Document Collection

Once your service has started, you will receive individual instructions for the secure submission of required documents.

04

Review and Application

We review the documents provided, prepare the application and submit it to the Danish authorities. Both partners remain responsible for signing any declarations that legally require their own signatures.

05

Authority Decision

The Danish authorities assess the application. They may request additional information or documentation. Only the authorities can approve or reject an application.

06

Ceremony Coordination

If included in your selected service, we coordinate with a suitable municipality and assist with securing an available ceremony date.

07

Your Legal Ceremony

You travel to Denmark for the ceremony. After the wedding, we can assist with apostille or legalisation where required.

Services & Prices

All cases are assessed individually before a service is confirmed. We may recommend a different service if the selected package does not match the complexity of your case.

Already Approved – Ceremony Date Assistance

For couples who already hold a valid Certificate of Marital Status but need assistance finding and coordinating a ceremony date in Denmark.

€695

service fee

Ceremony availability cannot be guaranteed. Couples must be flexible regarding municipality, location, weekday and ceremony time. The Certificate of Marital Status must remain valid on the wedding date. A Certificate of Marital Status is normally valid for four months. If it expires before the ceremony, the couple must reapply and pay a new government fee.

Add-on: Apostille & Legalisation — from €250 per certificate (+ possible courier fee, translation and third-party costs)

All applications are assessed individually before a service is confirmed. Approval and processing times are controlled solely by the Danish authorities. Ceremony availability is controlled by the relevant municipality. All MarryDenmark service prices are displayed as consumer prices. Official fees and third-party costs are separate.

What We Handle

We work with couples in a wide range of situations. Every case is assessed individually.

Couples with different nationalities

Each partner's nationality determines which documents are required. Mixed-nationality cases are assessed individually.

EU and non-EU couples

Cases involving one EU and one non-EU partner often require additional documentation regarding legal stay and immigration status.

Couples living in different countries

Both partners' countries of residence are relevant to the document requirements and the application process.

Couples with previous marriages

Divorced or widowed applicants must document that all previous marriages have legally ended. Document requirements vary by country.

Same-sex couples

Denmark permits civil marriage for both opposite-sex and same-sex couples. The same application requirements apply to all couples.

Couples already approved but missing a ceremony date

If you hold a valid Certificate of Marital Status, we can help coordinate a ceremony date. Availability depends on the municipality.

Previous experience with a similar situation does not guarantee the same authority decision. Every application is assessed by the Danish authorities on its own merits.

Why Couples Choose Denmark

Denmark offers one of the most accessible legal marriage processes in Europe — with clear requirements and no unnecessary red tape.

Legally valid in all countries

A Danish marriage certificate is internationally recognised and can be apostilled for use in any country.

No residency requirement

You do not need to live in Denmark or hold Danish citizenship to get married here.

Fast processing available

Express weddings within two weeks may be possible, subject to nationality, residence, and document readiness.

One point of contact

We manage the full process — from document review to municipality coordination — so nothing falls through the gaps.
