Denmark Welcomes All Nationalities
Denmark is one of the most accessible countries in Europe for non-EU citizens who want to get legally married. Unlike many European countries, Denmark does not require either partner to be a resident, hold a European visa, or have any prior connection to the country.
This means the following combinations are all accepted:
- Two non-EU citizens (e.g., Indian + Pakistani, Nigerian + Filipino)
- One EU citizen + one non-EU citizen (e.g., German + American, Danish + Brazilian)
- Non-EU citizens living in Europe (e.g., on work or student visas)
- Non-EU citizens living outside Europe entirely
What Is Different for Non-EU Citizens?
The core process is the same for all couples. However, non-EU citizens should be aware of a few additional considerations:
1. Additional Relationship Evidence
The Danish government may request more detailed relationship evidence for non-EU couples, particularly when both partners are non-EU nationals. This typically includes:
- 3–5 photos together from different occasions and times
- A factual relationship timeline (how you met, when the relationship started, current living situation, future plans)
- Proof of cohabitation if applicable (shared lease, utility bills, etc.)
2. Apostille or Legalisation
Documents from non-EU countries almost always need apostille (if the country is a Hague Convention member) or embassy legalisation (if not). This applies to birth certificates, divorce decrees, and civil status certificates.
3. Schengen Visa
Non-EU citizens who are not visa-exempt will need a Schengen C visa to travel to Denmark. We recommend obtaining government approval for your marriage first, then using the approval letter to support your visa application.
4. Translations
Documents not in Danish, English, or German must be accompanied by certified translations. This is particularly common for non-EU applicants whose documents are in their national language.
Countries We Regularly Handle
We have experience with applications from virtually every country. Some of the most common non-EU nationalities we work with include:
Is the Marriage Recognised in My Home Country?
Danish marriage certificates are internationally recognised. With apostille legalisation, your certificate is valid in over 100 countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.
For countries that are not Hague Convention members, additional embassy legalisation may be required. We can advise on the specific process for your country.
