Denmark Marriage for Indian Citizens

Everything Indian couples and mixed-nationality couples with an Indian partner need to know about getting legally married in Denmark.

Can Indian Citizens Marry in Denmark?

Yes. Denmark accepts marriage applications from Indian citizens regardless of where they live. You do not need to be a resident of Denmark or hold a European visa to apply. The entire process is handled remotely — you only travel to Denmark for the ceremony.

This applies to:

  • Two Indian citizens marrying each other
  • An Indian citizen marrying an EU/European partner
  • An Indian citizen marrying a partner of any other nationality

Documents Required for Indian Citizens

The following documents are typically required. Exact requirements depend on your individual situation:

Passport

A valid Indian passport. All pages must be scanned — including blank pages, front cover, and back cover. Scans must be in full colour, high resolution, with no fingers, shadows, or cropped edges.

Birth Certificate

An original or certified copy of your birth certificate. Indian birth certificates issued by the municipal corporation or registrar are accepted. The document should be apostilled through the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) or the relevant state authority.

Proof of Civil Status

A certificate confirming you are legally free to marry. For Indian citizens, this is typically a "No Objection Certificate" (NOC) or an affidavit of single status, issued by a notary or the relevant authority.

Divorce Decree (If Applicable)

If you were previously married, you must provide the final divorce decree from the Indian court. The decree must be complete — all pages, signed, and stamped. Apostille through MEA is typically required.

Apostille & Legalisation

Indian documents generally need to be apostilled through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). India is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, which simplifies the legalisation process. We guide you through exactly which documents need apostille and how to obtain it.

Translations

Documents in Hindi or other Indian languages must be accompanied by certified English translations. Documents already in English are accepted without translation.

Schengen Visa for Indian Citizens

Indian citizens need a Schengen C visa (short-stay/tourist visa) to travel to Denmark. You can apply at the Danish embassy or VFS Global centre in India.

Recommended approach:

  1. Complete your marriage application and receive government approval first
  2. Use the approval letter as supporting documentation for your Schengen visa application
  3. This significantly strengthens your visa application by proving a legitimate purpose of travel

You typically only need to be in Denmark for 1–3 days. There is no mandatory waiting period.

Common Issues for Indian Applicants

Name variations — Indian documents often show different name formats (with/without middle name, father's name variations). All names must be consistent across documents.
Missing apostille — Indian documents without MEA apostille are commonly rejected. Ensure all required documents are apostilled before submission.
Incomplete divorce decrees — Indian court divorce decrees must include all pages and the final order. Partial decrees are not accepted.
Low-quality scans — Documents must be scanned in full colour at high resolution. Photos taken with a phone are generally not accepted.

Is the Danish Marriage Certificate Valid in India?

Yes. Your Danish marriage certificate is internationally recognised. With apostille legalisation (which we can arrange), it is valid for registration in India and accepted by Indian authorities.

Many Indian couples use their Danish marriage certificate to register their marriage in India under the Foreign Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act.

Timeline for Indian Couples

A realistic timeline from first contact to ceremony:

  • Document gathering: 1–3 weeks (depending on apostille processing in India)
  • Document review and application: 3–5 days
  • Government approval: 5–10 working days
  • Schengen visa application: 2–4 weeks (varies by location)
  • Ceremony in Denmark: 1 day

Total: approximately 4–8 weeks from start to ceremony, depending on how quickly documents and visa are processed.
